Outside The Courtroom

Outside of the law, Greg’s primary focus is his family. They live in a large house in the western hills above Lower Hutt.  Greg has been actively landscaping the property over the last 10 years. The family share their home with four ‘rescued’ cats, four chickens and a Scottish Terrier named Holly.

Other ‘outside’ interests are as follows:

Greg is also an avid sports fan. He has previously coached boxing, including training All Black legend Bernie Fraser for the 2002 Fight for Life (televised fundraiser for youth suicide initiatives), the same tournament in which then National Party leader Bill English fought. Greg is a former president of the Otago Boxing Association. Other favoured sports include Rugby Union, Rugby League, Cricket and Netball.

Wainuiomata Lions Rugby League Club

Greg is a main sponsor of the Wainuiomata Rugby League Club (WRLC). Greg was ‘recruited’ to the WRLC by his friend Detective Sergeant Brendon Mears who coached their U17 squad and forever extolled the virtues of the Club and the huge service they provide to the Wainuiomata community and in particular to ‘wayward’ youth. As a result Greg agreed to sponsor the Under 17 team in 2008. They were undefeated Wellington Club champions that year.

The next year he sponsored the Senior Reserve Team who also went through the season undefeated and easily won the Wellington Club Championship grand final. Since 2010, Greg has sponsored the Premiers (coached that year by former Kiwi’s Captain John Lomax) who narrowly lost to Porirua in the grand final. Greg’s involvement with the WRLC has steadily increased each year and he is now on the Executive Committee, taking a leadership role in the future direction of the club.

All Blacks Neemia Tialata and Piri Weepu try out the Wainui jerseys!

Is this a sign of things to come??

Greg and Catherine are enthusiasts and collectors of contemporary New Zealand art, with favourite pieces from Ralph Hotere, Pat Hanly, Trevor Moffit, Allen Maddox, Nigel Brown, Catherine Manchester, Gretchen Albrecht and Ian Scott.

Greg and Catherine are also interested in horse racing, their first horse “the Kiss” out of “Carpark Flyer” enjoyed success winning six races and finishing a very credible 6th in the 2008 NZ Cup. The Kiss’ career was cut short by injury in July 2009 and she is now to breed. Of 22 starts she finished top 3 on 11 occasions.

1969 classic Jaguar

Greg is the proud and doting owner of a classic 1969 Jaguar 420G. The car is the same age as himself, although he acknowledges that it has weathered much better! At nearly 18 feet long, it is the biggest and most luxurious model that Jaguar has ever built. This particular car has a red leather interior and full walnut trim (including picnic tables) and is sitting on E-Type wire wheels.
